Drought exposes unknown graves
Rusape dam also known as Lake Rusape has been surrounded by many unanswered mysteries for a long time.
From Daniel the man popularly believed by many who hail from Makoni district and beyond to magically switch from being a human being to a Hippopotamus, to the stories of a mermaid that grabs and kills a resident from the town every year!!!
Located in the Land between Rusape and Tsanzaguru the dam is used to supply water for Rusape urban residents and irrigation water for farmers living downstream.
The mighty Rusape river (which is believed by historians that be where the town got its name) supplies water into the dam throughout the year.
However many young and older Rusape residents don't know that before the dam that whole lake was occupied by people who were later relocated to pave way for the dam construction.
These people had their deceased relative's graves in that area and possibly weren't offered a chance to exhume the bodies of their beloved relatives for reburial in their newly found homes when they were relocated.
As the water started to increase in the man-made structure the graveyards became submerged and stayed underwater for a very long time until a drought came and water levels started to decrease, -nature has a way of exposing the hidden.
The exposure of those graves wasn't spared from being linked to the mermaid mysteries.
Rumour has it that every year there is a mermaid that lures a Rusape resident to the dam and kills him/her.
Most residents from this town are convinced that the mermaid exists but with the exposure of these graves another school of thought now says there is no mermaid in Lakeview.
They believe that the restless spirits of the deceased people whose graves lie meters under the water need to be appeased and they are the cause for the mysterious deaths of people at the dam which some are accusing the mermaid they have never seen.
Do you believe that the deaths are caused by the mermaid or they are caused by the restless spirits of those lying in the submerged graves?
