BIO-DIGESTERS -The way to go for new rural homes.
By Environmental Editor
The Best Way To Turn Waste into fertilizers and energy.
Biodigesters are a hit in most rural and peri urban areas where the kitchen, animal and human waste normally doesn't have a well planed waste management facilities.
A biodigester (see pic insert) is a substitute of a septic tank ,It is a waste collection tank that utilizes waste to produce fertilizers and biogas (probably the best way one can turn waste into some (money-saving something)
A biodigester consists of an airtight tank (can be made from polyurethane or concrete and cement) with which waste can be diluted in water flow continuously.
The mixture of waste (mainly perishable kitchen waste, animal matter and human excreta from toilets) is then fermented in that airtight tank using microorganisms that are readily present in the waste
Anaerobic fermentation takes place, which means the fermentation happens in the absence of oxygen and bacteria.
The bacteria responsible for decomposition then forms methane also known as biogas which is flammable and can be used for cooking when tapped into your gas stoves and burners.
The residue from this process is a highly powerful organic manure(fertilizer) high in nitrogen, phosphorous, and potassium (N.P.K)
HOW TO BUILD A BIODIGESTER
The following steps are a step by step to making a proper biodigester
1:Survey your biodigester site
2:Culculate the volume of waste that your homestead produces
3:Build a biodigester that has the capacity to handle all your bio waste
4:Design your waste transportation system from all your waste points to your biodigester
5:Now design and install a pipe system that channels methane gas from the bio digester to your kitchen or workshop
6:Frequently clean your bio digester by removing the already naturally processed organic fertilizer and use it in your field or garden
You can alternatively package the fertilizer into bags and sell it to those who need it and make money
HOW TO GET BIOGAS FROM THE TANK TO YOUR STOVE /BURNER?
Valves are connected to the hose/pipe without the use of gas regulators from the tank to your gas appliance
Always make sure that the valves are completely turned off/closed when the burner or stove is not in use.
