YOUR 2022 "GREEN" RESOLUTIONS

2022 choose to be eco-friendly
So we all have been writing down our 2022 goals and resolutions right?

Have you asked yourself how many of the things you have listed on your goals for 2022 are "Green Resolutions"

Green resolutions mean that you are going to change your daily habits from eating, dressing, business operations, or even career choice to make them eco-friendly and support "Sustainable Development Goals" in a way or another.

Here is a list of "Green Resolutions" for 2022

1. Consider Walking all the short walkable distances that you used to drive t.

This only isn't good for the environment but also good for your health and financial freedom.

The more you walk the less fuel you burn unnecessarily thereby reducing your carbon footprint.

You also burn extra body fat and starch and stay in good health.

As if that is not good enough you also save a lot of money and save yourself from the notorious financial drought also known as "January disease"

2. Choose an eco-friendly hobby

What are eco-friendly hobbies?-- These hobbies are those hobbies that are fun and productive at the same time.

They include gardening, repairing your broken goods, appliances, clothing, and tools for purposes of reuse.

Like the first resolution, this also helps your mind be healthy and saves you a lot of money. There is a correlation between most of the green goals.

3. Instal a Solar Power System on your business or property

This one is for those individuals who have the financial means to do so.

Investing in a reliable solar power system is one goal you can focus on in 2022

For those living in countries where power cuts are our "daily bread," you will understand the importance of this one.

Nothing hurts more than getting your power switched off whilst in the middle of your online work task /school assignment or cooking your favorite meal whilst watching your favorite movie or sports match.

This seems like an expensive and hard-to-achieve goal but it is worth it. A long-term investment that may see you also saving lots of money shortly.

4. Plant a tree every month

1 tree a month multiplied by a year is equal to 12 trees!

How amazing is that knowing that in 2022 you as an individual planted a dozen trees?

Planting trees doesn't only beautify our environment but it also gives us this feeling of responsibility and belonging to this planet.

The feeling of waking up sitting under the shade of a tree that you planted, Telling your friends, and family that I planted this in 2022 after reading an article on Environmental and Social Development News Africa and getting inspired is in itself inspiring.

5. Last but not least, Normalise visiting this website

Visiting and reading this website is the highest form of being eco-friendly and sustainable

The more frequent you get updates from this website the more your mind remains environmentally conscious. Following and sharing our posts is the best 2022 resolution one can make.

Wishing you a Happy Green and Prosperous 2022

From the Environmental and Social Development News Africa Team, we say Enjoy your New Year Celebrations responsibly.

Exchanging Unwanted but Reusable Goods For Waste Collection and Sorting

The African Project encourages incentivized waste collection and sorting

Illegally dumped waste is so rampant in townships due to the inability of official refuse collectors to keep up with the amount of waste coming from residents' households and businesses.

On the other side, residents feel like they have no choice other than to go and dump their continuously piling waste illegally.

This resultantly leads to the waste finding itself in our oceans affecting marine life and causing serious marine and inland environmental pollution

To avert this there is a need for the empowerment of Environmental Activists like myself. I appreciate this platform for offering me an opportunity to share with the world what I think can be done to easily get the access waste that waste removers can not keep up with most from the overpopulated high-density suburbs and informal settlements

A project I named The Afri-Can project which is still at a planning stage was a creation that came to me after I saw a lot of plastic and glass bottles, metal cans, plastic shopping bags, and all other forms of waste lying around every time I take a walk in my neighborhood.

It is then when I thought that if those responsible for waste collection in those areas can partner with Environmental Activists, Waste Management, and Recycling Companies to help us create awareness and also give some sort of incentive to school kids and the unemployed residents who collect and sort waste our neighborhoods will forever be clean.

My idea involves creating an internet game shop that only uses unwanted computers and game consoles, and if possible food hampers and school kits, and uniforms for both kids and adults who can bring an agreed amount of sorted waste at the facility.

We can also add a second-hand clothing shop in the same facility where people can donate their unwanted clothing and shoes.

A lot of people would appreciate picking up and sorting plastics and other waste and exchanging it for a second-hand winter jacket, pair of takkies, jeans, or any other clothing item.

Why unwanted Computers and game consoles?

E-Waste is a big problem on the opposite side of high-density suburbs and informal settlements. Most people struggle with where to put their old cellphones, computers and game consoles, and other electronic devices (if they don't want to sell them as second-hand goods)

That is why I  am proposing that instead of selling them to e-waste recyclers or second-hand goods users they can donate them to The Afri-Can Project and or similar organizations that are fighting illegal dumping and plastic-free oceans and communities so that they can be put to good use where kids will get internet browsing time or internet gaming time if they bring bags of sorted Cans, Plastic or glass waste.

I am cognizant of the fact that this might be considered child labor by children's rights activists but I feel like the benefits will be worth the labor as many parents can't afford to buy game consoles or computers for their kids.

For unemployed adults, food is a scarce resource and it will be beneficial if companies that are involved in the manufacturing and packaging of their products in plastic, glass or metal packaging can as part of their Corporate Social Responsibility set aside funds to buy food hampers that they can give to those unemployed people who are willing to earn their meals after doing this noble cause of cleaning their neighborhood by collecting and sorting illegally dumped waste they find in their streets

In conclusion, allow me to say "Our seas require everyone's concerted effort to keep them clean."

If you have read this article and you have resources mentioned above that can be used to incentivize waste collection consider yourself sitting on the solution to save our environment and marine life.

Be the change you want to see by contributing even the things you consider as garbage.

Your trash can be someone's treasure so before dumping any of your unwanted possessions think of how can that be reused and make a difference

Let's all not forget to Reduce, Rethink, Repair, Reuse and finally Recycle!!

CHRISTMAS FOOD PARCELS FOR THE LESS PRIVILEGED

Mr. Kenesias Dambakurima-Director Turning Point and Founder Voices For African Wildlife.

Cape Town, Strand

By T.Matewa

Several less privileged families in Cape Town, Strand have been remembered and will be blessed with some food parcels for the 2021 Christmas.

The Christmas holiday widely celebrated across the globe mostly by Christians and other religions is traditionally known as a day when people feast and have a chance to meet with their friends and families.

For most people, it is a day that everyone will be eagerly waiting for, but for those who don't have much, it is just like any other day.

We caught up with Mr. Kenesias Dambakurima known on social media platforms particularly Facebook as Kenny The Activist who has managed to organize food parcels for the disenfranchised families in the Strand area under his Exmas-Remember The Needy Initiative and he told us about how the idea came about.

Dambakurima who is a Human and Animal rights Activist is the Director of Turning Point, A community-based organization that empowers underprivileged people in disenfranchised communities by helping them start income-generating projects and also assist drug and alcohol addicts to stop drug and alcohol abuse, rehabilitate them, and helping them to start new clean chapters in their lives resulting in gender-based violence and drug and alcohol-related crimes eradication.

He is also the founder of Voices For African Wildlife that advocates for Animal rights.

The Christmas Parcel Project

Dambakurima told this publication that they launched the Exmas-Remember The Needy initiative on the 12th of December 2021.
"We bought Christmas combo parcels enough for 14 families and additional food items that were donated by members of his team can make up to 3 extra parcels."
"We are expecting to bless at least 17 families this Saturday," said Dambakurima

The initiative is a "Willing People/Community Project " which started when Mr. Dambakurima posted on Facebook on the 21st of December 2021 appealing to well-wishers to join him in his plan to buy Christmas food parcels for the needy.

"I was looking for only 4 people but I  ended up getting 15 people who showed interest in helping me make this initiative happen" he added.

"To me, it was a surprise as I wasn't expecting such a huge response as I had previously asked people to help us with clothes, food, blankets, and other basic household items for a family whose house had been razed down by fire in the Du Noon area".
"A lot of people positively responded to this call and donated, some donations are still coming, On the 19th of December 2021 I was in Du Noon to hand over the donated goods to the unfortunate family and I will be back again with more goods  I received from the people on Friday the 24th," said Dambakurima expressing gratitude to those who heed his call to assist.

For the Exmas-Remember The Needy Initiative 16 people swiftly responded and donated money to buy food parcels despite the short notice that Dambakurima had given.

"We are going to distribute the food parcels to families selected by Community members at Xaki Play Park, Asanda Village in Zola, Strand  ."

"Our selection process for the beneficiaries is very transparent as they are selected by community members and supporters/followers on the Community Facebook Group who live with them and know exactly who deserves to receive the parcels depending on their circumstances," explained Dambakurima, assuring all stakeholders that the donated food parcels would reach their intended recipients.

Dambakurima concluded by emphasizing that all he is doing for the underprivileged families is not his effort alone but a concerted effort by the Zimbabwean community across various communities.

He has also worked with several South African brothers and sisters on most of The Turning Point and Voices For African Wildlife projects.

Those willing to assist with sponsorship or donations can get in touch with Kenesias Dambakurima  on the following contact details

KACHEYA OFFERS ALTERNATIVE TO FIREWOOD

James Kacheya showing his Solar Cooker in Rural Zambia.

By Takesure Matewa

James Kacheya is not just educating rural area dwellers about Climate Change but he is also providing solutions to help mitigate it.
"This is my idea and I focus on educating and building Resilience against the negative effects of Climate Change at the same time offering an alternative source of energy to rural communities," James told this publication.

He went on and said, "My country Zambia is losing approximately 300,000 hectares of forest every year largely due to unsustainable production of wood fuel which in most cases involves illegal cutting down of trees to make wood charcoal for selling or domestic use."

James thinks that something has to be done and the right time is none other than now.

"Everyone has a role to play to stop this deforestation "added James who is a teacher by profession.

Kacheya has decided to take his teaching skills to the local community and educate them on the significant role trees play in this changing climate.

"After people have been educated an alternative source of energy needs to be provided and the alternative is Solar Energy," Kacheya said.

A  Kitchen hut in most African rural villages

According to James, Every year Zambia has 2000 to 3000
hours of sunshine making it naturally suitable for solar energy generation.

"One good thing about solar cookers is that the food cooked using them is "smoke-free" and tastes better  compared to firewood cooked food," remarked James
He has been trying the idea and local communities are loving it.

James emphasized that Solar stoves are environmentally friendly, unlike wood fuel which leads to deforestation.

Currently, James is looking for support to reach as many communities as he can with his noble project.
He is willing to work with any individual, corporate world, or Non-Governmental Organizations interested in his idea.

There are costs to purchase the stoves, distribute them and make follow-ups in the communities which require motorbikes hence his sincere appeal for financial support.

Those interested in supporting and partnering with James can contact him here

Opinion!! ABOUT OVER POPULATION,HUNGER AND POVERTY

It's not Overpopulation it's greediness and inhumanity.

People queuing for food distribution

Contrary to the false idea that the world is overpopulated hence a shortage of resources leading to poverty I beg to differ and say it is not and will never be overpopulation.

First lets look at the word "Overpopulation ".The word itself represents a misrepresentation in the sense that it is correct to judge in a negative way something that is "over" the normal limits but what we also consider is that the limits are not correct.Simply put "You cant have an "over" of something where the limits are not set or wrongly set.

In this case what is the maximum number of people that can be supported by this planet for us to come up with the word "Overpopulation "?

This planet and its human resources are already producing enough food to feed its 7.9 billion people. Maybe one day the Earth will be "Overpopulated "but at the moment it is not and all the talk about overpopulation is just a distraction from the real causes of war hunger, poverty and social inequalities the world face today.

I am surprised that millions of people in some parts of the world like Madagascar, Sudan, and Somalia still face starvation whilst tonnes and tonnes of food go to waste elsewhere in the world.

Food parcels being prepared for distribution

According to United Nations statistics estimated by Worldmeter, the world's population is 7.9 billion in December 2021.

In 2019 the world produced 1 trillion pounds of food commodities including wheat, corn, rice, milk sugarcane, and others

I haven't mentioned other types of food that mother nature provides naturally which are in most areas the major diet for people living in remote and deep rural areas where food production and other statistical data is rarely collected.

This planet is not short of either land and food to support and feed its population or the resources and manpower to help distribute the available food equally, No!

We are also told that overpopulation is another cause of climate change which is also another distraction and diversion from the real culprits of the crisis.Population and emissions are not necessarily related.Data from IPCC shows that 10% of the Earth's richest people contributes 40% of  world emissions.

Data accessed from the World Population Clock: Worldometer also shows that in 2022 and 2023 the world  population will be 8.0 billion and expected to reach the 9 billion mark only in 2037 signifying a relative steadiness in population increase.

What we lack is the social responsibility and will to act humanly to ensure a concerted effort to reach out to those with no means of getting basic needs like food.

Overpopulation is not the cause of hunger...Capitalism, corruption, greed, inefficiency, and the reluctance from those in positions of responsibility to properly allocate resources is the major cause of hunger and poverty.

Depopulation will never solve the hunger and poverty problem as long as there is no social and more importantly political responsibility among those who are in authority to make it their obligation to see that everyone doesn't starve to death whilst tonnes of food lie idle in warehouses, barns, supermarkets, etc waiting for their expiry date.

I am not advocating for total handouts of food but I am dispelling the false narrative that has been peddled by certain groups of people that overpopulation is the cause of hunger in this world.

The world also has vast underutilized arable land that can be used to produce more food enough to feed those living in areas where food production is almost impossible due to different factors like droughts and other weather hazards.

Unfortunately, such land is in the hands of those who are greedy enough to keep it underutilized simply because to them it's a sign of wealth and power.

Similarly, the financial and natural resources needed to distribute and allocate food to the vulnerable population of this world is in the hands of those greedy individuals who don't even know how much wealth they possess not because of illiteracy but because they have just lost count of their wealth yet they still go around grabbing from, exploiting and displacing those who have nothing.

It's not overpopulation it's an unequal distribution of resources among people living in different parts of the world and under different socio economic circumstances.

SOLUTIONS TO WATER CRISIS AND POLLUTION IN URBAN AREAS

A river in Urban Cape Town
A river passes through an urban residential area.

Rivers and streams that pass through urban areas are the most polluted due to various factors ...Rivers transport clean safe water from their source high up in mountains or middle of deep forests up until they pass through a town or city.

Some of the major factors why water pollution is so rampant in urban areas include poor sewage and waste management systems and deliberate illegal dumping of pollutants from both residential, agricultural, and industrial areas

Illegal dumping of Waste leads to water and environmental pollution

When there is a poor refuse collection service in any residential area illegal dumping is inevitable.
Residents need proper refuse collection services or education on how to sort their waste for recycling purposes.

Another contributor to water pollution is manufacturing factories that have no proper waste management plan.
Most of these factories secretly dump their wastewater which contains highly toxic chemicals in water sources.
Some of these pollutants include dye from textile factories, oil from Engineering, and other manufacturing industries that produce waste oil.

To stop illegal dumping which is a major cause of water pollution Municipalities need to provide a reliable waster collection, transportation, and sewage treatment system.

Residents also need to be educated about the dangers of their actions when they dispose of their waste at illegal sites.

There should also be mass Awareness Campaigns teaching residents about clean water and wastewater management in all urban areas where residents can be taught how to recycle their wastewater and reuse it for other purposes before letting it evaporate back to its natural cycle.

Leaking taps should be fixed in time and blocked sewage drains should be cleaned to prevent them from bursting as that may cause serious Environmental health hazards.

Industries need to be strictly penalized if caught dumping any form of waste by the county's Environmental regulations and legislation.

URBAN GARDENING TIPS

How to establish a successful urban garden?
Vegetables in an urban house's flower bed.

By T.Matewa

Nothing is as satisfying as knowing that the food you are eating was grown by no other than yourself!!!

Besides the food being organic, healthy, and delicious it also gives you this deep sense of responsibility.

Yes, the responsibility that I  am in control of and have immensely contributed to what I cook and serve to my family for lunch, breakfast, or supper.

Many people have got enough pieces of open space in their urban yards that they are underutilizing or using for other nonproductive uses.

I will be giving you a good idea of how to make good use of those spaces by growing vegetables or setting up a small orchard

Below are pictures illustrating how to establish an urban garden
Wooden planting boxes

Make or buy wooden boxes of your desired sizes and shape.

Start filling them up with all your kitchen and garden waste.

When the waste has decomposed and turned into compost you go to the next step.

The Next Step

Potatoes are grown in a planting box

In these boxes fill the top with topsoil and grow compost depending on which crops do you want to grow.

I have given a good example of how you can grow potatoes in the above picture.

Once you have planted your crops of choice you can protect your  crops  from direct scorching sun, insects, and pests by installing the covering nets as shown in the picture below

Covering nets protects crops against pests

I will end here for now...Please share and comment on our  articles and follow Environmental and Social Development News Africa  for more tips

If this article has been helpful to you comment and share it and tell me if I must come back with the next article about Estashing an urban orchard.

HAIL STORM DESTROYS TOBACCO IN ZIMBABWE

Tobacco Crop after a strong hailstorm

Marondera

Some tobacco farmers in parts of Manicaland and Mashonaland East provinces have had their close to 9 months of labor reduced to nothing after their tobacco crop was destroyed by a strong hailstorm yesterday.

The promising leaf crop was destroyed leaving only standing terms as all leaves were broken into pieces by the harsh storm.

Tobacco, a labor-intensive crop from the nursery stage to the day it gets to the auction floors is grown for its leaf which when ripe it is plucked, cured, graded, and baled before being auctioned.

These are very labor-intensive processes that a farmer has to go through and it is very devastating for all the labor to be reduced to nothing just like that.

Hail storms and other weather hazards like cyclones are a result of climate change and they always cause unprecedented damage, financial loss, injury, or deaths to human beings.

This is the reason why everyone including farmers themselves must do all they can to mitigate their carbon footprint by using clean renewable sources of energy and assisting with reforestation by replacing all the trees they cut in the process of their day-to-day farming activities.

All farmers are also encouraged to ensure their crops in case of these natural and man-made disasters like hailstorms and wildfires.

INSTALLATION OF A SOLAR SYSTEM

 Solar System

Electrification of homes in particular those in the rural areas has been a promise that many governments will never fulfill
Among the many reasons why this promise will remain a promise is

1:Insincerity on the part of the government officials who at times divert the rural electrification funds to their personal use.

2:The deteriorating power generation plants that have been either neglected or not given proper service

3:Unsustainability the traditional sources of energy sources  ( Which is where I want to advise you my valuable the reader)
Traditional energy sources like Thermal Power, Nuclear, and Hydro-Electric Power have somehow proved to be either unsustainable or expensive to maintain to a point where they can produce enough power to supply a country with a minimum population of about 14 million people.
This might not be the case in every part of the world but in developing countries particularly those in Africa it is.

It is for that reason that each homestead need to invest in a decent solar system and completely forget about that never fulfilled promise

Here I will list what is needed to have a simple decent solar system.

1:Solar Panels: These are the ones that you mount on top of your roof.
The size and number of panels depend on your power requirements and your budget.
They come in different sizes, designs, and qualities.

2: Panel Mounting Frames/Racks: Most people just place their solar panels on a roof and do not take appropriate measures to make sure that their panels are properly mounted to prevent them from being blown away by strong wind associated with rooftops.
After buying your panels make sure you buy mounting racks or you can make them yourself if you have some metalwork skills.

3:Solar Inverter(s): This is equally important as the solar panel as this is the component that converts Direct Current (DC) electricity from your Panels to Alternating Current (AC).

Again like panels, there is a variety of inverters that you can choose from on the market.
Size depends on your solar panel sizes and quantity and above all your household's electricity needs.

4:Batteries: Batteries are very important as they are the storage "Bank" of all the electricity generated by solar panels during the day.
Similarly the size, number, and quality of batteries are of utmost importance as they are the ones that wear off more often and should be replaced.

Solar batteries

There are types of solar batteries including Lithium-ion batteries and Lead Acid batteries.
I prefer Lithium-ion batteries but after all, just like panels inverters affordability is much of a factor when choosing these solar system products.

Switchboards, circuit breakers, plugs, and electric cables are other things that you need to have ready before setting up your system

When you get the above, You are now good to hire someone to set your system up if you can't DIY.
It is very risky to try and set up the system if you don't have basic electrical knowledge as you can cause severe damage or fires if you don't do the wiring correctly.

THE LINK BETWEEN ART RELIGION AND CLIMATE CHANGE

FROM THE ART GALLERY

For ages, artists have used their art from paintings, music, sculptures, and drawings to express themselves and tell different stories in a unique style.

One of these artists is Dutch artist Aert Pietersz.

In the painting below Pietersz's painting tells a religious belief about the Final Judgement.

In the 17th Century up to this day Christianity has held a strong belief that on the last day, the angels would blow their trumpets and the dead would rise from their graves for the final Judgement day when God would send the righteous to heaven and the wicked to the damned hell.

It was a subject of religious art in the below painting that Pietersz painted a year before his death in 1611.
Pietersz' painting can be found on https://Resources4ClimateChange

The same painting has been reimagined by Valentin, A highly talented  Russian landscape artist from Tver

In explaining the link between Climate Change, Art, and Religion the inspiration of the art reimagine were derived from the discovery of prehistoric animals delivered from the permafrost of Siberia  as Climate Change thawed the ice in which they have been perfectly preserved "Valentin illustrates a similar resurrection story to that of humans on the Judgement Day when the final trumpet will be blown."

The creatures that so far have included a wolf, a lynx, a bison, a baby mammoth, and two lion cubs are between 10 000 and 40 000 years old and have their skin and fur perfectly preserved.

UNEMPLOYED COMMUNITY HERO SEEKS HELP

Rhino Bulo-The unemployed man who has helped beachgoers by constructing staircases at Mouille point beach.

Cape Town:

Story supplied by: Sharon Stansfield

A 28-year-old unemployed man Rhino Bulo originally from Krugersdorp is looking for a job

Bulo a former Construction Company employee from Krugersdorp has already proved his willingness to work through several voluntary work projects he has done around the Sea Point area.

Among the projects is the construction of staircases at Mouille Point Beach.

 A CRY FOR HELP

He got the motivation to build those staircases after a good lady who was bringing him some food when he was on another voluntary mission of cleaning the beach slipped on the sloppy and bumpy path leading to the beach. Fortunately, she fell but didn't get hurt.

Rhino has also helped the community by filling up some potholes in the parking lot at Granger Bay

He did the filling of those potholes with rocks he picked from the beach after seeing how drivers were struggling to drive trying to avoid those potholes.

"Nobody asked me to do all the voluntary work I have done," said Bulo.

"I see a problem and I volunteer to help solve it" he added.

"It been so hard finding work during COVID 19 pandemic but I am looking for a job, Anything will be much appreciated, I am very good with my hands "Bulo  concluded

The man has already demonstrated excellent leadership skills backed with a willingness to work.

We are appealing to anyone among our readers who can offer a job to this selfless and hardworking man.
