HAIL STORM DESTROYS TOBACCO IN ZIMBABWE

Tobacco Crop after a strong hailstorm

Marondera

Some tobacco farmers in parts of Manicaland and Mashonaland East provinces have had their close to 9 months of labor reduced to nothing after their tobacco crop was destroyed by a strong hailstorm yesterday.

The promising leaf crop was destroyed leaving only standing terms as all leaves were broken into pieces by the harsh storm.

Tobacco, a labor-intensive crop from the nursery stage to the day it gets to the auction floors is grown for its leaf which when ripe it is plucked, cured, graded, and baled before being auctioned.

These are very labor-intensive processes that a farmer has to go through and it is very devastating for all the labor to be reduced to nothing just like that.

Hail storms and other weather hazards like cyclones are a result of climate change and they always cause unprecedented damage, financial loss, injury, or deaths to human beings.

This is the reason why everyone including farmers themselves must do all they can to mitigate their carbon footprint by using clean renewable sources of energy and assisting with reforestation by replacing all the trees they cut in the process of their day-to-day farming activities.

All farmers are also encouraged to ensure their crops in case of these natural and man-made disasters like hailstorms and wildfires.
